Laverne Hesterberg

Laverne Hesterberg, nee Mueller, 98 of Waterloo, IL passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026. Born on January 15, 1928, in St. Louis, MO she was the daughter of William and Hilda (Zink) Mueller and her parents precede her in death. In addition to her parents, Laverne was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Hersterberg, her daughter, Gale Stanglein, her brothers: Harold (Virginia) Mueller and William (Edna) Mueller and her brothers and sisters-in-law.

Laverne was born in St. Louis, MO and spent her early years there. The family then relocated to rural Waterloo, IL where she would reside for the remainder of her life. She graduated from Waterloo High School. Laverne married her late husband, Vernon in 1947. They then began their family. Laverne was a devoted mother and homemaker and helped out on the family farm. Laverne especially enjoyed caring for the farm animals. Later in life, she volunteered at the cafeteria of Waterloo Elementary School. She also volunteered her time and talent with the FHA and University of Illinois Home Extension. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Waterloo for many years.

In her spare time, Laverne enjoyed sewing and was known as a talented seamstress. She also enjoyed cooking for her family. In her later years, she loved going camping and spending time traveling in her RV. Her grandchildren brought her great joy, and she cherished the time she spent with them. Laverne will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend of many.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Don (Barbara) Hesterberg and Jim (Kimberly) Hesterberg; 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren in addition to many nieces, nephews and beloved friends.

Private services will be held. Laverne will be laid to rest next to her husband at Konrad Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo, IL.
