John M. Carpenter, Sr.

March 26, 1957 — October 13, 2025

Huntingtown, MD

John Michael Carpenter, Sr., 68, of Huntingtown, MD, passed away in Cahokia Heights, IL on Monday October 13, 2025. Mike was born in Sumter, SC on March 26, 1957, to John Wade and Betsy (Frankhauser) Carpenter and his parents precede him in death.

Mike lived in Calvert County, MD, near the Chesapeake Bay, where he enjoyed many summers fishing and crabbing from his boat. He met his beloved wife, Bonnie in 2000, and they were married in a Las Vegas style wedding on June 29, 2002. They both retired in June 2020 and then bought their first camper. They then travelled all across the United States and packed in many adventures over the next five years. They met many wonderful people and enjoyed many camping communities and made many wonderful friends.

Mike enjoyed beaches, mountains and especially going on cruises and spending winters in Florida with family. Mike met Frank Tirado immediately after moving into his new home many years ago. This friendly neighbor became his best friend and introduced him to spelunking or caving, a passion that Mike held for the rest of his life. Mike will be remembered as being very smart, kind, friendly and always willing to help out anyone in need. He had a knack for being able to fix anything and was eager to share his skills. He was a man of faith who loved the Lord, his wife and his family deeply. His family is comforted knowing he is now with the Lord. Mike will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Bonnie (Layton) Carpenter, his children: John M. (Ashley) Carpenter, Jr., Aaron (Lynn) Carpenter and Stephen Carpenter,; his step-children: Robert Gilbert, Christina (Jay) McGann and Sarah (Mark) Sullivan; his siblings: Pat Carpenter and Paul “Samuel” Carpenter; his grandchildren: Mikayla, Petey, Preston, Kevin, John Michael, Hannah, Benjamin, Lizzie, A.J., Abigail and Penelope in addition to many nieces, nephews, extended family and countless friends.

Per his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be planned for a future date.
