Hollis R. Denning, 89, of Millstadt, IL, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026. Hollis was born on October 14, 1936, in Saucier, MS to Joseph and Geneva (Wedgeworth) Denning and his parents precede him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, Richard Denning and his siblings: David, Everett, Hasbur, Charlie, Hoslee and Ginny; and his sister-in-law, Mary and brother-in-law, Dennis.

Hollis grew up in Saucier, MS and graduated from Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College with an associate’s degree. He enlisted in the United States Navy after college and served his country proudly. Upon return to civilian life, he moved to Belleville, IL where he met his future wife, Margaret “Peggy” Schmitt. They were married on May 4, 1968, at St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, IL. Hollis and Peggy then moved to Millstadt and began their family.

Hollis worked for Anheuser-Busch for over thirty years until his retirement. He later went to work for Grand Manor Independent Living as a manager, staying for 12 years and finally retiring at age 79. Hollis was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge, St. Clair County Anglers and the Millstadt Commercial Club.

In his free time, he loved fishing and hunting. Hollis was a loving caregiver for his beloved wife, Peggy for many years. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and dear friend of many.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 58 years, Margaret “Peggy” Denning; his daughters: Laura (Terry) DeMond and Lana (Kent) Fiedler; his grandchildren: Dirk (Drevan), Amy, Brendan and Cory, his great-grandchild, JaNyla, his extended family and many friends. Also mourning his passing are the members of the Creason Family.

Visitation will be held on Saturday August 29, 2026, from 8:30am-10:30am at St. James Catholic Church, 405 W. Madison St., Millstadt, IL, the Knights of Columbus will conduct a walk-through at 9:00am. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30am with Fr. Evaristus Akabueze, Celebrant. Interment will then take place at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery in Belleville, IL with military honors.

Memorial contributions in memory of Hollis R. Denning may be directed to the Millstadt Senior Center or St. James Catholic School.
