Daniel A. Pontious

Daniel A. Pontious, 81, of New Athens, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday December 2, 2025. Daniel was born on June 7, 1944, in Chester, IL and his parents were Ardell and Mary (Dilday) Wall who proceed him in death. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lani (Cook) Pontious, his son, Thomas Pontious, his daughter, Kimberly Oliver and his sister, Nancy Thies.

Daniel grew up in Southern Illinois. He enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam Era. After his term of service, he met Lani Cook and they later married and started their family. Daniel was very hard working and had a long career at Peabody Coal until his retirement.

In his spare time, he loved hunting and fishing. He was especially fond of bass fishing and rabbit hunting. Daniel was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His memory will be cherished by all those who knew and loved him.

Daniel is survived by his children, Aaron Pontious and Alicia Pontious (Ian); his sisters, Linda Foutch and Jackie (Lonnie) Warren; his grandchildren: Staton (Lexy) O’Dell, Ashley Tomlin, Tyler Oliver, Brook (Chris) Hollaway and Ethan Oliver; 9 great-grandchildren, in addition to many nieces, nephews, extended family and beloved friends.

Per Daniel’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
