Charlie Edward Smith, Jr., 75, of Waterloo, IL, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday December 8, 2025. Charlie was born on February 26, 1950, in East Prairie, MO to Charlie E. and Evelyn (nee, Boyer) Smith, Sr. and his parent precede him in death. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Jason D. Westberry.

Charlie grew up in East St. Louis, IL. As a young man, he entered the United States Army in 1970 and bravely served his country during the Vietnam Era. His service was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and he was awarded the Sharpshooters Badge for his rifle skills.

After his military service, Charlie worked with horses as a farrier. Charlie retired from the National Park Service having worked for several years at the St. Louis Arch. In his spare time, he loved fishing and riding motorcycles. His dogs were very important to him, especially Delta, Puppup (Dakota). Charlie was a past member of the East St. Louis VFW Post 3480 and was also a member of Concordia Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, IL. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and dear friend of many.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Charlie E. “Chuck” (Erin) Smith, III and Diann (Dan) Westberry; his siblings: Judy (Bob) Fairchild, Susan (Dennis) Jackson, Pamela Geoppo and Michael E. Smith; his grandchildren: Cassie Westberry, Sam Goedecke, Hayleigh (Ryan) Burrows, Jake Westberry, Jay Westberry, James Westberry, Kyliee C. Smith, Owen S. Stahl; his great-grandson, Dylan Burrows in addition to many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Private services will be held.
