Walter Archie Volkmar of Granite City, Illinois passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013 at Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Granite City, Illinois having reached the age of 87 years, 9 months and 21 days.

Born in Bond County, Illinois on December 13, 1925 he was the son of August Henry and Rachel Volkmar, nee Turpin. He was united in marriage to Nina Clayton on February 17, 1951 in Carbondale, Illinois and she survives.
Mr. Volkmar was a custodian at Granite City School District #9, a member of St. Peter Evangelical United Church of Christ in Granite City and Odd Fellows Lodge # 1031 in Madison, Illinois.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his brothers, Ray Louis Volkmar, Forest William Volkmar, Karl Marion Volkmar, Edward Elwood Volkmar, Fred Harwood Volkmar, Burl Kenneth Volkmar and Vernon Dealhart Volkmar.

Surviving are his wife, Nina Volkmar of Granite City, Illinois; his children, Carol Ann (Gary) Sturdivant of Granite City, Illinois and Forrest Alan 'Butch' Volkmar of Worden, Illinois; his sister, Hillary; two grandchildren, Chris (Holly) Sturdivant and Greg Sturdivant; three great-grandchildren, Emma Sturdivant, Will Sturdivant and Evelyn Sturdivant, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Friends may call on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter Evangelical United Church of Christ, 2101 Cleveland Boulevard, Granite City, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Gateway Regional Home Health and Hospice or the Animal Protection Association.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at the church with Rev. Aaron Ban officiating. All other services will be private.
